Seriously Impressive Device. Period.
This is the best device I have ever owned for portable gaming. I’ve had the steam deck, rog ally, rg556, used my galaxy devices with USBC grips… nothing comes close to the portal. The 7 inch OLED screen is downright gorgeous. No matter the use – emulation, android gaming, streaming and even some light windows game emulation – it always looks fabulous and smooth due to the heavy saturation and true blacks along with the 120fps (hz) screen with OLED sub-millisecond response times… the experience is fantastic. The SOC is a Snapdragon 8 gen 2 processor/apu? This processor packs a heck of a wallop. PS2 era emulation at 4k resolution and portable gaming for hours due to large battery/efficiency. More on battery later. I struggled to find a game that did not easily hit 120fps unless it was framecapped by the devs. Seriously powerful device for the price. It does occasionally hitch in switch emulation but honestly, the 60fps patches far outweigh in QoL than the hitches hinder it. I haven’t touched my OLED s2itch once since the ODIN.The battery? Fantastic as well. Not only does it hold an INSANE charge in many use cases, but it charges fsst and thanks to the fans – the device can stay relatively cool during charging use. More on cooling later. When it comes to native gaming: games like Grid and Destiny managed to last past the 4-5 hour mark. 4k retro emulation landed me about 3-4 hours at max brightness and max performance. Some emulation can be done in the lowest performance profile and still look smooth/great while getting a much larger battery life around 5-6 hours. In most cases, you’ll be taking a break naturally more often than taking a break to charge. Emulating GBA games lead to an incredibly impressive double digit 10-15+, nearly week long session without once needing a charger. My favorite use case is game streaming from PC, which at 120fps 4k streaming and lowest performance setting: same story as gba emulation. Double digit battery life and multiple days between charges. I stream alot.Cooling: this device is incredible. No matter what you throw at it, there’s 3 curves to keep the device cool. When I 4k emulate, I usually have the fan on max. Its not too loud and keeps the device from melting in your hands. Which is a huge factor in the ergonomics.Ergonomics: the device is light enough to not cause fatigue within 30 minutes like many other 7inch devices. No complaints. While the ROG Ally definitely packs a much larger punch, if you have a dedicated PC and strong wifi – in home streaming will absolutely obliterate local gaming on the ROG ally. The rog struggles to even hold 60 fps and will die in less than 2 hours doing so. Streaming? Easily can hold 120fps and insane battery life. The OLED screen of the odin helps offset the streaming latency as well – so you get a pretty solid experience this way.The ram is more when you’ll want to weight your options. I got the 12gb model and frequently find I am stuck at 8gb useable memory – that’s while using Icebox to keep system/unused apps in hibernation. While I have not ran into any memory constraints so far, if you can afford the 16gb model – you’ll appreciate being future proof. All together? I cannot recommend this device enough. I have been impressed every day I have used it.(Will update with images when I can think of anything worth taking a photo of)
