Great photo scanner
Great for pictures and word documents.We have lots of boxes of pictures, mostly 4×6, but some scattered sizes. This machines takes the stacks of pictures, obout 20-30 at a time with no problem. It’s jammed a few times after 4 bins of pictures (2,000 pictures). The computer app is easy to use, either to rotate pictures, or to put them in their folder. I also made various folders for documents that I scan. Adjusting the image quality is easy for each document type, ( picture, receipt, etc)It’s worth the money. And I think it scans fast, even for high quality pictures.

Works much better than I expected it too!
So far I’ve just played around with the features on the unit and I have to say I am more pleased than I thought I would be with this device. My main purpose was to digitize documents more over than photos. I have tried scanning documents, as well as some photographs. When you scan photographs, there’s options, you can do a real quick scan with just basic functions, or you can choose some more in-depth functions color correction sharpness, etc. it does slow the scan down just a tad but not much. Overall ask him to stack a 4 x 6 photos in less than a minute. I have a few thousand 4 x 6 index cards which contains historical information from a business. You can see a sample video in this review of it scanning these index cards and how quickly the machine operates. I have scanned a few samples into PDF format and it works great. I scanned 70 8 1/2 x 11 pages front and back in less than two minutes. The only documentation that comes with this machine is how to set it up. I had to go to the website and download the user manual. Also, this has a feature where you can set up your own predetermined settings and save them to a particular job number then when you get ready to scan, all you have to do is select the job number on the display and hit start. Example job one on my machine scans whatever is in the machine and saves them to JPEG format. Job number two scans 8 1/2 x 11 documents and save them to a pdf. Job number three scans 8 1/2 x 11 documents double-sided and save them to PDF. One very important feature is that if you have a double sided document it scans both sides in the first single pass without you having to turn the documents over and re-insert them like you do with a traditional scanner. This really comes down to what your desired needs are but I am very happy with this. This is the first canon product other than my photography camera that I have ever owned and I am very pleased with tjos purchase.

Excellent multipurpose scanner.
The bottom line: I’m very pleased with my purchase, I’m wishing I had bought this long ago; it is an excellent multipurpose scanner. As a document scanner, easy 5 stars. As a photo scanner, the “Photoshop” capabilities are inferior to the Epson. If there were no Epson, I’d give this 5 stars instead of 4.There are two parts to a scanner: the machine and the software.I enjoy using good tools and the machine is fast, handles a large variety of sizes (important for photos), any length of document (important for legal papers), and its very easy to clean. It also scans both sides at the same time, not need to turn something over and scan again. I’ve run old Polaroids, stacks of twenty photos through it, long real estate documents, drivers license (thick and stiff), many sizes of photos. Occasionally I get a jam or double feed but the machine stops so quickly that nothing has been ruined. Very nice machine and an amazing time saver compared to a flat bed scanner.I’ll describe the software in two parts as well. The interface and the image correction.The interface has a small learning curve. First you have to make a click-on decision: document, or 1-sided or 2-sided photo. Next you click-on decide where you want the scanned image to go, the Output. It comes with multiple options. The factory options can be deleted and you can also create new “Output”. The weakness of the software is that it doesn’t use pop-up windows to give an image a name a select the scan to location. You have manually open your “Output” choice if you want to change the image name and/or location. After you review/change those options, you must close the “Output” and click on “Scan”. I’d prefer that when you click on the “Scan” button a popup you show you the name and destination. If you’re not changing any settings, there’s a “SCAN” button on the machine; load you item press scan, and the image goes to the last location with the same name last used with a number appended (001, 002, etc.). This also means if you want to name your photos individually, you must go through the edit process for each photo; but I suspect that is common to all makes of scanners.The software has imperfect correction capabilities. Based on real user reviews, EPSON sets the gold standard. I’ll suggest that Epson won’t be able to surpass the RS40 on document scanning; only better for photos. The two sided scanning isn’t as good as Epson either. It scans both sides of photos even if there’s only a “Kodak” imprint on the back of the photo. So if your goal is to get the “cost is no object” photo scanner, I suggest you double the cost of the Cannon RS40 and buy the Epson FastFoto FF-680.

BE PREPARED FOR FREQUENT HEADACHES & TIME WASTED
This Canon RS40 scanner is a constant headache. It’s prone to freeze ups & error messages, failures to load the driver (even after driver was loaded & scanner for working awhile), unexplained rerouting of your photos to nowhere. One problem after another. Beyond that, the quality of scanned photos is very poor, even at 400 or 600 dpi. It is fast & may be worth it for scanning documents if you can keep it going, but NOT FOR PHOTOS. I’ve talked to the Canon support techs six times. Five of those times, the tech helped me get it working for awhile tho only once did the fix allow me to set the properties for the scanned photos. But then the next time I try to use it, it can’t load the driver or the scanned photos don’t go to the designated folder, or the scanner jams. Over $300 down the drain. I hate to even try selling it & passing on this lemon to someone else. So disappointed.

Expensive up front but after scanning 1000 dusty family photos its still going strong. Software is easy to use, user friendly, easy setup even on an ancient laptop

Item has arrived earlier than predicted. It looks goodsadly I am unable to try it as the power cord is for the USAIt would have been nice to know, so i could have arranged for an adaptor or chosen another product

Muy buen equipo para escanear rápidamente documentos y fotografías. Hasta ahora he escaneado mas 150 fotografías de todos tamaños con diferentes ajustes de brillo, contraste, resolución, etc. y todo perfecto. Se han quejado de que raya o deja marcas en las fotos, pero no es así, la clave es limpiar de polvo las imágenes o documentos antes de escanearlos y también asegurarse de no introducir fotos o documentos rotos ni con dobleces. Altamente recomendable y mucho ahorro de dinero comparado contra el scanner de Epson
