WD_BLACK 4TB SN7100 – Best NVMe money can buy
I bought the WD_BLACK SN7100 4TB to replace my smaller WD SN570 Gen3 boot drive. Installation was straightforward i.e just slide it into the M.2 slot, and done.PerformanceUsing CrystalDiskMark V9.5.0, I consistently saw around 7000 MB/s read and 6200 MB/s write on the 4 GB test, and about 6800 MB/s write on the longer 64 GB run which was remarkably close to the advertised specs. Random 4K read/write speeds also feel quick, and Windows 11 boots in roughly 5–6 seconds. However, I did observe some throttling when running 64GB Q8T1 test with temperature reaching 59°C and speed dropping to 4500MB/S. Though, it’s still faster than any Gen3 drive. App launches are near-instant. I haven’t tested large game installs (like 100 GB titles) since this particular system isn’t built for heavy gaming, but for productivity and content creation, it’s been great so far.Thermals and EfficiencyIdle temperature hovers around 30°C but under sustained load, temperatures could reach up to 60°C and this is without a heatsink(except some black material came with the original laptop drive) which for a Gen4 drive is exceptional. The controller here isn’t just fast but impressively power-efficient. Compared to my older Samsung 970 EVO Plus Gen3, this one runs at a lower wattage. It’s a great fit for laptops or compact builds where cooling headroom is limited.Storage Capacity and SoftwareUsable space comes out to about 3.63 TB, which is standard for 4 TB drives due to the difference between base-10 and base-2 (1000 vs 1024) calculations. My only gripe is WD’s software. The legacy Dashboard app has been replaced by Kitfox, and the 4 TB SN7100 isn’t fully recognized yet. Hopefully, WD or SanDisk pushes an update soon, as the drive itself is fantastic. Also, it could be formatted for Windows, Linux or MacOS.Value and EnduranceThis drive uses TLC 3D NAND, unlike the WD SN5000 which is QLC-based(4TB version) and often priced just a few dollars cheaper. The SN7100 offers an endurance rating of up to 2400 TBW, which should easily outlast multiple system builds. If you plan to use it in a server or NAS, I’d suggest either keeping a backup drive(RAID 1) or going with WD Red SN700, which is designed for heavier write cycles. While it’s not the cheapest 4 TB Gen4 SSD, the performance easily rivals the Samsung 990 Pro and Crucial T500, with the added benefit of lower power consumption and cooler thermals.VerdictIf you’re upgrading from an HDD or even a SATA SSD, the SN7100 feels like a quantum jump. It combines blazing fast speed with stable thermals, and generous capacity in one package. This is an excellent choice for prosumers(creators, gamers) or anyone who’s looking for a reliable performance with minimal heat output. To conclude, if you’re looking for a drive that stays cool, handles large transfers without any hiccups, and just works; look no further. Highly recommended.

“Used” is completely fine for me.
I bought the SN7100 4TB as “used” for a really good price. It arrived in original packaging, but not sealed. No visible defects. After install, I tested speed vs. reviews on the internet, and it matched fairly closely. I wrote 1.5TB to it without issue. The SMART numbers indicated it had been powered up 3 times, its total runtime was less than a minute. It’s essentially new.I then installed “Sandisk Dashboard” which is the “toolbox” for this drive. Every check went well, the reported serial number worked when registering the product with Sandisk, so it’s not some bootleg of sorts. It’s officially supported and warrantied.About the actual drive, internet reviews will tell you a lot more, but it’s fast especially given its price.I recommend it. As far as recommending “used”, that might differ from vendor to vendor. I was shipped a perfectly good product for about 20% off… I’ll take it.

Brought my old iMac back from the brink
This has brought my 2017 iMac back from the brink of obsolescence. My Mac had slowed to a crawl and would take minutes for even the simplest of tasks. I’ve tried other drives, but was only able to get incremental improvements. Then I found this drive, which I installed in an external enclosure which supported higher transfer speeds. My old iMac is like new again(minus the ability to run the latest MacOS natively). I didn’t even have to open the iMac.I would gladly buy this again and recommend it to anyone who isn’t ready to buy a new computer.

Good solid storage solution for your data
I got this to expand the storage capacity of my MacMini. It was easy to install and came with everything I needed. So far, several months in, it’s not failed me, so I’m very happy with it. I haven’t always had great luck with Western Digital, but I think this was worth the gamble. I’ve had no heat issues whatsoever, and I was able to put my entire music library on it to free up space on my system. Design and function are as you’d expect.

Impressive performance for the money
Stunning performance for the money. This has 1TB and was installed in a BEELINK SEi12 computer that I bought about 18 months ago. Needed to upgrade from 512mb drive as I kept maxing out that older drive. I was not expecting a performance upgrade but with a PCIe 4.0 NVME interface, this drive turned in Crystal Disk Mark 8 read speeds of 7076.81 with write speeds of 6229.36. I was hoping for 4000 tops on both. I saw youtube videos that said this drive was a good value but not performance oriented. This upgrade exceeded the stock numbers by nearly 50%.

Works fine as a Windows 10 boot drive.
This works fine to replace a Samsung SSD that went bad. TWICE I have had Samsung drives go bad, so I decided to try WD since I have many of their spinning drives which still work. I would recommend that other users install a heat sink to prevent overheating. Also, if used as a heat sink, make FULL clones of the SSD every 1-2 months in case it fails, because automatic backup software doesn’t backup the hidden apps on a boot drive.

Bad Drive … turned out to be a Good Drive
It appears this NVME is defective out of the BoxThis brand new ssd will not initialize. Package was unopened with seal the intact.I tried to Initialize it on a different desktop and a Dell laptop.I get the error “Fatal Device Hardware Error”.Returning it and getting another brand.Update to my previous review:The day before I was going to return it a friend of mine asked if he could check it out.I don’t know what he did but he got it initialized and formatted on his Linux computer. It appears to be working fine now with no issues and good speed.

I highly recommend the WD Black SN7100 because this SSD is really efficient like crazily power efficient and you will be saving battery life and temperatures and still super fast that’s why I used for upgrading my Lenovo Legion Go 2 from Original Samsung 1TB 2242 SSD to New WD Black SN7100 4TB 2280 SSD.

I installed this SSD in a Gen 3 laptop, knowing I wouldn’t reach full Gen 4 speeds, but wow, I still noticed a clear and satisfying improvement! This was my first SSD upgrade, replacing the stock 1TB Gen 3 drive that came with my system, and the boost in responsiveness and load times genuinely surprised me.Using a benchmark tool, I saw sequential read speeds around 3500 MB/s and write speeds over 3300 MB/s — right at the ceiling of Gen 3 performance! Even random access speeds were strong, which helped with smoother multitasking and faster game loading. One thing I didn’t expect at all: my laptop’s fan noise dropped noticeably! Compared to my previous SSD, this SN7100 runs about 5–7°C cooler under load, and even while playing the most popular gacha game and heavier AAA titles, the system stayed cool and quiet. That alone made me smile — less noise, more focus!Even though my system doesn’t support Gen 4, I’m glad I chose this drive. It’s ready for future upgrades and already performing impressively within Gen 3 limits. If you’re looking to upgrade from a stock SSD, this is a solid choice!

amazing storage that is definitely worth every ounce of its price! With astronomically high storage of 2 terabytes you can fit in all of your favourite games and other applications needed without worrying about running of of storage. Very easy to setup and put into the motherboard and has very quick speeds for it to read and write data and so this makes it quick to launch games or any other apps that you may need to use in a short notice. Due to its high speeds, games run technically fast than other types of storage devices leading to much higher fps. It is also high quality so I expect it to last me for many years to come. Finally, it doesn’t get hot at all meaning that it will not fail me when running my pc.
