Exceeded my expectations — amazing quality and performance!

Great 4K webcam for people who are on camera a lot.I do a lot of video calls, product reviews and podcast recording, and I don’t always have my mirrorless camera with me, so I needed something better than my laptop’s webcam when I’m on the road. I also wanted something I can use for secondary angles in my podcast studio. This has been a solid choice for me.One of the main reasons I picked this up is the phase detection autofocus. I tend to move around when I talk, and cheap webcams can’t keep up. This one tracks faces and stays sharp. That’s huge if you’re not sitting perfectly still during calls.The other reason is the fact that the image quality is noticeably better than the old webcams I’ve used before. The 1/1.3″ Sony sensor does well in normal room lighting. You don’t need a perfect setup to look decent on screen, but the better your lighting, the better the image.Setup was dead simple. Plug it in via USB, and it works. No software, no drivers. I was up and running in under a minute. I use Ecamm as my software and it was recognized instantly. I was able to dial in all of the color and focus settings in the included app and really fine tune how it looks.A few things to know:The stand that comes with it allows you to put it on your monitor, or you can use the 1/4-20 threads on the bottom to attach it to a tripod.With the magnetic mounting system, switching to vertical video is super easy.If you’re recording content or on client calls multiple times a week, the quality difference is worth it. If you’re just doing the occasional Zoom happy hour, save your money.Does what it’s supposed to do without any fuss and it looks great. That’s all I really needed.I think Yololiv knocked it out of the park with this.

Gorgeous webcam, has problems at 1080p 60hz.
Firstly, the hype around the image quality of this webcam is real. I came directly from the c920x and there is no comparison in terms of fidelity regardless if you are operating at 4k or at 1080p, it’s that much better. The narrow aperture and large sensor produce a cinematic depth of field that also allows for great performance in low light conditions. There is legitimately a DSLR quality in terms of IQ.With that said, there are some legitimate problems when using the camera at 1080p 60hz.#1: The autofocus when operating at 4k 30hz is mostly fine, impressive even considering the narrow depth of field. However the autofocus performance in 1080p 60hz is visibly worse. It will tend to hunt for your face, sometimes even when simply turning your head. This is the case whether you have the AF set to “Face” or “Continuous”, it is less pronounced in “Single” (but the tracking area in “Single” is very small, so it’s hard to recommend using that). Hopefully this is something that can be improved over time, for me personally it is enough that I don’t feel completely comfortable using it at 60hz.#2: The first firmware update for this camera introduced 15% to 20% crop in the field of view when operating at 1080p 60hz. I confirmed this with the manufacturer as I had already been using the camera for a few days before installing the firmware update. They said that they are working on resolving this, which is good, but it is absolutely NOT acceptable to limit the functionality of a camera after it is purchased.#3: This is an always on camera when it is plugged in, meaning it continues to run even when it is not communicating with an application (most other webcams shut off). This may not matter to everyone, and this is probably something they can fix down the road with a firmware update, but it still needs to be mentioned.While the above issues are frustrating, I will likely be keeping this webcam. The only alternative with a comparable sensor is twice the price of the S3. You are getting a lot of IQ for your money with this. Hopefully they continue to improve the camera over time.
