Hacked and needed network security upgrade, which this Netgear smart switch enabled
Long story short, my ISP provided router went bad, so I ordered another. The morning after I put that router in, I noticed that my network had been compromised. I don’t know if it was the new router, per se’, but I only noticed the weird activity after I installed it, through possible compromise of my Synology NAS as noted by repeated login attempts in its system logs. A few weeks later, NextDNS showed my MacBook repeatedly and constantly calling iCloud servers in CHINA, which has forced Apple to provide iCloud encryption keys to the Chinese government and access to said servers anytime they want. All of my passwords, documents to include financial and tax documents, contact info for family and friends…everything…potentially in the hands of an adversarial government.I dove into networking and network security as deep as I could. Months later and I STILL feel overwhelmed. There’s a reason why cyber security, network engineering, and network administration are all separate, highly paid career fields, after all. Granted, my little ole home network pails next to the needs and complexity of a large company or government organization, but this scared me. Most of my networking and security needs compared to large organizations ant this point, post compromise, are a matter of scale, not kind….at least, that’s how it feels now.VLANs to separate all of those Chinese made Internet of Things bulbs and switches from the devices containing my sensitive info like my phone, tablet, and computers, became imperative, as did relative peace of mind with products from an American company like Netgear. Great…what’s a VLAN? PVID? Port Spanning and mirroring? I didn’t know and while the GUI is relatively easy to navigate, all of these gobbedly gook terms made by nerds for nerds didn’t make it easy for me. Thankfully, Netgear has a great community forum and support section with manuals and “how-tos” on their website. It took a long time to figure out how to buy, install, and configure pfSense firewall and Security Onion appliances for a functional relatively secure network. This inexpensive Netgear smart switch helped make the security that these appliances provide a reality through its VLAN and port mirroring capabilities, but I couldn’t have done it without the superb community forums and help sections on their website.Netgear may have earned a life-long customer. Thanks.

Finally, an affordable, next-level, production-grade Gigabit Networking Switch.
Finally, an affordable, next-level, production-grade Gigabit Networking Switch. I’ve had this switch for about a week now and just in that week alone I give it a full 5/5 stars. To better explain why:Without the ability to use VLANs prior to getting this switch, I risked non-isolated security standards. I now have the capability to connect each of my networked devices together, all in their own environment. Assigning VLANs is super easy using the User Interface on my local network, running on the switch. It’s a nice plug-and-play UI that works out of the box with the switch. The size of the switch makes it super easy to integrate into even the bulkiest of home-labs; you’ll be re-thinking your entire networking setup. One thing I’ve noticed is that the metal is extremely well-constructed and allows long-term use with minimal wear-and-tear over time. The fact that it distributes almost no heat even when in full use and fully-connected, is beyond my expectations for the price of this switch. It’s nice to have a sturdy, reliable, and quiet switch that seamlessly integrates into my setup. Speaking of reliability and stability, it has saved me a few times having an actual interface I can access in the event I mess something up on one of the main devices connected to it; thus affecting other networking equipment. This works as a fallback in case I need to undo any changes you couldn’t otherwise undo. I can sleep at night — figurative and literally, knowing my network is secure from malicious attackers, and because the temperature/heat doesn’t affect my small space at all; and noise is not being generated whatsoever. No fan, no noise! Heat sync does its job flawlessly.

Reliable backbone for busy office setup
I recently added this managed network switch to my office to handle a mix of PCs, a laptop, a couple of game consoles, and even smart TVs—and it’s been an absolute game changer.Performance & Stability: The switch keeps everything running smoothly without any noticeable lag or bottlenecking. Gaming and streaming run flawlessly, even when other devices are pulling heavy traffic.Management Features: Having a managed switch means I can set up VLANs, prioritize traffic, and monitor network performance. Being able to give priority to my work devices during the day while letting the consoles and TVs run off lower priority settings is a real advantage.Build & Setup: Solid metal housing, fan isn’t loud, and plenty of ports. The web interface took a little learning curve, but once I got through it, the control was worth it.Future-Proofing: With both gigabit speed and flexible management options, this switch ensures my office network can expand without a problem.Overall, this is more than just a plug-and-play switch—it gives me the stability and control to keep a busy office (and entertainment setup) running at full speed. Highly recommended if you’ve outgrown a basic unmanaged switch and want something that can scale with you.

Works great
very easy to setup, very nice build quality and perfect for setups needing multiple ethernets, we get consistent speeds from all ports.

Interface is okay.. but gets the job done
I set this up in my homelab to start leaving and messing with vlans. Managment interface is a bit lackluster, but when paired with some basic unmanaged switches and a good router like openwrt or opensence, it works well for speed limiting ports, as well as assigning specific ports(and unmanaged switches) into different vlans

Installation is easy
For national security issues, I replaced the XX-link with this one, installation is easy. BTW, under $25.00 for an enhanced eight ports gigabit switch is a great deal.

This is really great. It worked fine straight out of the box. You can manage it from your PC and configure the more sophisticated features from there.

This works great as a manageable network switch. Setting up is very simple. I have assigned it a fixed IP so that it is easy to identify and manage. No issues whatsoever.

Works just fine and cheaper then purchasing from retail store, you do get a plain box and a universal plug with the adaptor for your region, so I guess that’s how they sell it cheaper.I bought this to replace the same unit that failed after about 4 years. The old one still connected but all ports were limited to 100 Mb and couldn’t get the full gig connection, the power light also failed to light up.The new one is totally plug and play, I didn’t even bother connecting to it via the 162.1.192….. or whatever……it just works and no one else can connect to it so I’m not worried.
